My Top 10 Scary Movies! (John too)

Ok I would like to admit these aren't just my top ten scary movies there a combination of my own and my other halves which is why I put John too in the title. We had three that were the same, so there is our top three and a bunch which we argued about. So in preparation for the spookiest night of the year I thought now would be a good time to talk horror. Are you ready? I'm not! I am trying not to give away too much for those who may not have seen those classic movies, but just incase your offended by my vague synopsis then I will issue a SPOILER WARNING!

10. The Thing

                                                                                                            [Courtesy Universal Pictures]

The Thing is a pretty underrated movie, it's directed by John Carpenter and has some great moments. I didn't have it on my list, my number ten was Cujo, but I decided to use this movie instead as it has a Cujo type moment. So The Thing takes place in the Antarctic, a Norwegian helicopter follows a wolf to an American research station. The helicopter is then damaged, most of the crew die and the rescue team of MacReady (Kurt Russell) and Dr. Copper (Richard Dysart) are sent to check out what happened.

I'm leaving it there as I don't want to spoil much, the movie is older than I am but if you're looking for a great, somewhat scary cult movie then look no further. I'm sure everyone by now has at least heard of this movie. So give it a try, if you think it sounds like something you could be interested in. Watch the trailer below.

9. IT

                                                                                             [Courtesy of Warner Brothers Television]

Ok this technically was a two part miniseries but lets not get bogged down with schematics. I really didn't want to talk about this film, even though it was on my list. We should have went with Rosemary's Baby. So this movie takes place over two time periods, one when the cast as children first find the character of Pennywise, who transforms into your greatest fear. The second part takes place when the children are adults and try to defeat a child killing Pennywise. See it's just horrific, don't let your kids watch it.

I again don't want to talk about this movie and I am getting scared even talking about it. It's one of those movies that I watched as a kid that's stuck with me throughout my life. It's one of the only ones I haven't rewatched. Thanks Stephen King, without you something else might terrify me. Watch the trailer below, I didn't!

8. The Shining

                                                                                               [Courtesy of Warner Brothers]

So Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), is offered a job as the winter caretaker of the isolated Outlook hotel. which closes for the winter. He and his family make their way there for the winter. The hotel has an evil and spiritual presence which tries to influence him to commit horrific acts while his psychic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) is given visions of a terrifying past and future. This movie is hard to watch and changed horror for the better, it was up against Cabin Fever on this list and it knocked it out the park. Not that Cabin Fever was a bad movie, I was really petrified during it, but The Shining is just a different type of scary.

Stephen King might have had slight issues with Stanley Kubrick's, The Shining but he is among few. Yes the book is way scarier and I always leave room in the freezer when I'm reading the Shining, but the film is also really good. The music, the tension as it builds. It is definitely scary but one that is constantly keeping you on edge but interested to see what happens next. Check out the trailer below, I managed to watch it all as the trailer kept me on edge, but was interesting. Oh I have chills.

7. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

                                                                                     [Courtesy of Bryanston Pictures]

Ok the original is spelt like that and I've no idea why, let's continue shall we? Also this wasn't on my list but it should have been, sorry The Ring. Ok, so in Tobe Hoopers movie five friends go on a trip to their grandfather's house in the country, sounds nice right? They have heard some reports of vandalism and robbery and want to investigate, ok sounds less nice but still if there is any trouble there is five of them, they be fine right? Well maybe they would be if it wasn't for the chainsaw wielding maniac and his cannibal family. The entire town is pretty creepy, let's face it.

Again I am trying not to reveal too much by being completely vague. This movie terrifies me as it's not some spiritual being, or some giant spider but it is an actual human doing this to others. Then they eat you which is just one of everyone's greatest fears. There is also the creep factor of every single person you run into in this town. Check the trailer out below, I think I might have to put lunch on hold for now.

6. The Descent

                                                                                                            [Courtesy of Lionsgate]

I can feel you all looking at me like I'm wrong. The Descent was up against Pet Sematary and it won because it scared me more, I have previously stated that I watched Pet Sematary when I was too young but rewatching it as an adult it petrified me less than The Descent. So Neil Marshall's The Descent is about a caving exploration that goes wrong when a bunch of female climbers become trapped in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. But they are not alone and are persuaded by a bunch of mysterious creatures.

I again don't want to give too much away but this movie is inviting and so gory. I felt sick while watching this movie but I had to know what had happened and what these creatures where. It draws you from the opening and if it doesn't scare you then you have a strong stomach my friend. If you have a fear of enclosed spaces then this may not be the movie for you. Check out the trailer below, I managed to watch it all, I want to watch this again!

5. The Birds

                                                      [Courtesy of Universal Pictures]

This won against The Omen, because we've got that type of horror covered, believe me, and it's just a scarier movie. There I said it! Sorry Damon, I will continue to be petrified of you, don't hurt me. So the Alfred Hitchcock classic reminds us all of why we should fear the bird. The Birds is about a San Francisco socialite called  Melanie (Tippi Hedren) who travels to North Carolina following her boyfriend Mitch (Rod Taylor). Birds start acting funny and begin to attack people, as they grow in number the violence worsens.

Now a lot of the movies I talk about all have great suspense but none on this list can top that movie. The suspense has you off your seat with one eye hidden behind a pillow at the same time. I'm glad I never watched this when I was too young as I would also have another fear added to my great long list. I now look at birds with one fishy eye always open. Great film and a great scare. Check out the classic trailer below, he makes birds sound nice, don't be fooled!

4. The Exorcist

                                                                                           [Courtesy of Warner Bros]

I suppose I have to talk about my scariest film of all time. Yes I know it's number four on the list but myself and John had three of the same movie out of a list of ten so we decided they would be our top scariest movies so this one got pushed to number four and beat out nothing as John has a sequel on his list and they don't count. Ok I'm going to have to give some background before I talk about this movie. I was raised Catholic so I think way deep down that this could happen to me, most people make fun of it and I know it is ridiculous but coupled with what I would like to call my crushing catholic guilt, then even talking about this movie gives me the sick feeling in my gut. That may be hunger, I still haven't felt like eating since I discussed number seven.

                                                                                                      [Courtesy NBC Television]

Ok let's give a synopsis, a teenage girl begins to act strangely, as though something is changing her personality, turns out she is possessed by a mysterious entity. The mother is extremely worried about her daughter and she seeks out the help of two priests to try and rid her daughter from this mysterious figure. It is just horrible to watch, I honestly cannot watch it again but end up watching remakes because I am a glutton for punishment. I say don't watch it but if you really want to be scared or if you aren't a wuss like me and want to laugh at a possessed teenager then go ahead. Check out the trailer below, I ain't watching it.

3. Halloween

                                                                                             [Courtesy of Compass Int Pictures]

So we are down to the top and although Halloween is a great movie we decided to put it in third place. Halloween starts off with a six year old Mike Myers on October 31st, 1963 who kills his sister and sent to a mental institution. In 1978, fifteen years later he escapes on October 30th, will he kill again on Halloween night? I guess you'll have to watch it and see.

I keep feeling the need to apologise for not having a long synopsis, even though this film is thirty-seven years old, I really don't want to spoil it for those who might not have seen it and are at an age where they can watch it. What can I say about this movie which hasn't been said on a hundred different occasions? The score is perfect and scary in it's own right, It is on the edge of your seat good, with a satisfying yet curious story. Set the tone for great slasher movies like Scream, which uses every trope in the book, I really enjoy it and you sort of feel for our villain as well. Check out the trailer below.

2. Rec

                                                                                          [Courtesy of Filmax International]

So John had both Rec and Rec 2 in his list of scariest horror movies while I just had the first one on mine so we will focus on Rec but Rec 2 is also a great film and if you fancy watching a few horror movies then the sequel will give you a great night but you'll have to read subtitles, sorry. Rec is a spanish film by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza which focuses on a television reporter named Angela (Manuela Velasco) through the eyes of her cameraman. They are doing a story about how firefighters work during the night and receive a call to investigate an apartment building in Barcelona where all is not what it seems.

Now this movie is terrifying, more so because of the language barrier, while watching I am always tense and paying all my attention to the movie before me. This is also why it has taken the number two spot from Halloween. This movie is so intimate as all we see is what is being shot on one camera which adds to the suspense when the group splits up. Definitely one to watch with a cushion to cover your face when you're scared to death.  Check out the trailer below and give it a chance, otherwise you will be stuck watching Quarantine (American remake) which isn't as scary.

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street

                                                                                       [Courtesy of New Line Cinema]

So this is my number one choice and you will all think, there are scarier movies out there but tell any kid about Freddie Krueger  (Robert Englund) and I doubt they will look anything less than petrified. So in a Nightmare on Elm Street several kids are being hunted by a serial killer who kills each victim in there dreams. Battling with Freddie is our young heroine Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) who has to try and stay sane and awake in this utterly insane world.

So this takes my top spot because it still to this day gives us all nightmares. You rewatch this Wes Craven movie or even New Nightmare and you will be out looking for the biggest dinosaur teddy out there just to keep you safe while you sleep. Freddy might be a bit less scary now, but this happens over times in horror movies, it will happen with Rec. But what you're left with is scary as it uses one of the things we need to exist and turns it on it's head. Definitely deserves the number one spot on my list. Check out the trailer below, and try not fall asleep.

Sorry to those which didn't make this list, there is a whole bunch of scary horror movies out there which didn't make it. I will list them below and don't be afraid to comment about this post or to make your own list. Now if you don't mind I think I'll go hide somewhere, but where is safe?

Game of Thrones - The Hall of Faces Trailer and Theories!

I've been watching out for this trailer for the past week and was pretty excited to see some footage from the new season. Instead we got to see the faces of characters, some of whom are long lost, and others who have yet to leave us. SPOILER WARNING for those who haven't caught up with season five. The trailer takes place in the Hall of Faces, which is inside the House of Black and White in Braavos. The hall looks great, creepy but great. We can hear some whispers which are too quiet for me to make out. Then Ned's (Sean Bean) face appears on screen, we then hear him say a line from the show's first ever episode called Winter is Coming.    "The Man who passes the sentence should swing the sword." The screen then fades to black and we then see a clip of some more rows of heads. We then hear even more whispers and which I think sounds like some drops of waters. We then hear the voice of Robb Stark (Richard Madden) who we hear give a quote from seaso...

Lion Rampant

So for those of you who haven't heard about this project it was leaked during the Sony hack. This as a potential sequel to Braveheart called Lion Rampant, after the flag I have shown above. Really it should be called Braveheart as Robert the Bruce was called the Brave Heart and his heart was taken into battle after his death. Depicting Robert the Bruce's story and the Battle of Bannockburn (24th June 1314) in Scotlands first war for independance where King Edward II was beaten in battle by a small force lead by Robert the Bruce. Robert the Bruce in Braveheart was shown as a traitor and I am hoping that this upcoming movie would mean that he will hopefully get the makeover he so rightly deserves. Although he did pay homage to Edward I, The Bruce really secretly supported Wallace (later publicly supporting him) and he did not betray Wallace, that was Sir John Menteith. This could easily turn into a what's wrong with Braveheart post so I will state that they did get the...

I dropped the ball!

........ Image courtesy of paradigmalibu These last few months I've felt as if I have dropped the proverbial ball, my mind has been witness to a stand off between Mental health disorders and things from my past I'd rather not constantly have to relive. It's buried itself into my soul while operating my mindless drone of a body, I've relived every conversation I ever had; thought of Friends long gone as I struggle to open up about my disability. I don't even like calling it that as it feels disrespectful to people like my parents; who's struggle and sheer joy of receiving two disabled free babies has been with me my entire life. But I am not OK - I feel like I have to admit that to the world. A miscarriage has taken me back mentally to a place I've not been for a very long time, and I'm petrified t...
